Evidence Conclusive for Dark Energy Discovery
Science Magazine has named the discovery of dark energy as it’s Breakthrough of the Year as reported by The Guardian. Based on over five years of meticulous observation it is now known that an unknown force is causing the observable matter of the universe, all the stars and galaxies, to move away from each other at an ever-increasing rate. This dark energy appears to be working against the gravitational force that attracts all matter. These latest observations indicate that dark energy, a force about which we currently have no explanation, accounts for a staggering 73% of the total composition of the universe.
I find this at the same time disturbing, humbling, and uplifting. It seems in our day-to-day lives that we are the masters of our universe and in complete control. Science has provided the answers to so many questions – but here is a fairly basic one, what is the nature of substance that comprises most of the universe? The current answer is that we have no idea. What I admire is that science is strong enough to admit that there are such unknowns and questions. This allows us to focus our great strengths, intelligence and curiosity, to continue to expand our knowledge of the universe.
