So what's up with the actual software?
You may be here from the front page of the Casdra Software site so I thought I'd post about what's been happening.
The most exciting thing for me is moving the code off of the Windows/CodeWarrior base it has been on from the beginning of the company. Two years ago I sold my Dell laptop and bought a Mac PowerBook G4 marking a return for me to Mac Land after a long absence. I made this move to support my web oriented projects but it left me in a bind with respect to my Palm software (not to mention the Power PC side).
I did the simplest thing at that point and used Virtual PC to continue to do Casdra Development on Windows. This was just "OK" - very slow but workable...it definitly had the side effect that I wasn't as interested in working on Casdra projects in general. This all came to a head in October. As I was working on an update to MagicTrak I had the bright idea to do a Windows Update on the Win 2k running on VPC...the update failed and left me with a machine that would not boot! Very frustrating. I had all the code (thank you CVS) and to finish MagicTrak I just did it on my desktop PC.
I immediatly started looking into Mac based alternatives for my Palm development. CodeWarrior was not a very satisfactorty solution as they had no native Mac OS X version and no plans for one. This meant diving into a world that I had managed to pretty much avoid in my development carreer - unix tools like gcc and make.
After a fairly long and painful process I have the Cribbage Partner code up and building on my PowerBook. I'm going to move the rest of the projects as I find time (and it creeps to the top of the project list). MagicTrak will definitely be next as I have some things to fix up in time for the next Magic card set to be released.
Yikes, a long post! Stay tuned and I promise to talk about the actual products.
