Whew! Part 1 was fun

I enjoyed part 1 of the Battlstar Galacticia mini-series, to my great relief. I quite liked the military vibe portrayed aboard the Galactica. It felt like a war ship and was a stark contrast to Star Trek. Ok, I also liked Starbuck...a lot.

I'm not sure what to make of the hard core Galactica fans who are in a tizzy about this remake. In general, I would rather see new stories, and I think there are certain movies which should not be remade, bacause how could you hope to make improvement. I certainly don't consider the original Battlestar Galactica in that category. It strikes me as the same calls that were heard from hardcore fanatics of the origianl Star Trek in responce to word about the Next Generation.

I think it was a good move for the producers of the new mini-series to, except for a few homages, jettison the backstory of the original show. Ron Moore undoutedly learned from his work on Next Generation that you can get painted into difficult corners bearing the weight of "cannon" from a 20+ year old show - in this case one that was generally poorly written.

I'm happier with this show then a typical premier episode of a Star Trek series. The actors seem comfortable with their rolls and there is room to grow. Though it's certainly not difficult, the Baltar character has significantly more depth than the original. John Colicos was a great presence in the original roll and I'm sure he did just what he was asked, be pure evil, but if there was ever a one dimensional character it was him.

I'm looking forward to part 2 tonight.
