Acquired taste
I finally played Acquire today. I have been a board game fan all of my life and read many times about the quality of Sid Sackson's Acquire. My sister-in-law has an original Avalon Hill bookcase version. I read the rules last night and we just finished a game. Well...I was crushed - but I made a huge error on my third turn. I was playing the game as if it was Modern Art and it's not! I caused a merger to occur between two hotel chains on that turn and chose to have the hotel that I owned take over. This seemed like a good play because I had a bunch of shares in that hotel chain already. What I did not realize is how soon I would run out of money. In the merger, my mother-in-law made $6,000 dollars. My sister-in-law got money from another early merger and for the first half of the game is was completely out of money and unable to buy stock while they were flush with cash. I'm looking forward to playing again now that I've been through a game. They also asked me to program an online version so we can play while we are apart.
