Book Review: Quicksilver
Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson
Volume I of The Baroque Cycle
Two book reviews so close to each other? And so far from my last review. Yes it has been slow going lately. I don't do this often but over the last few months I've had two books going at the same time, the previously reviews Dune: The Butlerian Jihad and Quicksilver. I finished both within a couple days of each other and boy am I glad.
What to say about Quicksilver? A plot synopsis would sound kind of silly (some have already said, "what plot?"). Suffice to say this is a story involving the predecessors of some of the main characters of Stephenson's Cryptonomicon along with oodles of historical figures from the time and is set mostly in the late 1600's. Now I can say that I knew next to nothing about this period of history so 900 pages later I know a lot more! On finishing Quicksilver I have a nearly identical feeling to what I had after Cryptonomicon, I'm very glad I read it and I'm glad it's over. I already have the second volume in the trilogy but I need a break.
Update: In between writing and posting this review I've already started and finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Great book - review coming.
