No Love for Riddick
I wasn't paying attention to the media coverage for Riddick but Hellroy clued me in that the critics weren't into it and that we really should not be surprised. It is true that most mainstream critics don't give positive reviews to genre films. What struck me about the Riddick review blurbs on Rotten Tomatoes is how they waxed rhapsodic about the excellence of Pitch Black. Uhh...Pitch Black got a whopping 52% on the Tomatometer.
I haven't seen Riddick yet but I'm certainly interested as Pitch Black is definitely a favorite of mine. I myself was worried when I saw the trailer as it's definitely over the top. I liked Pitch Black in large part due to the smallness of it. They clearly had a small budget (as sci-fi picture go) and they made the most of it with interesting characters in a good story with fun special effects. They have the dough now - what will they do with it. Hellroy says it's good so I'll check it out. And I certainly agree with him - don't trust mainstream critics when they're reviewing sci-fi or horror movies.
