Two Comments
Last night and this morning two comments from interviews struck me. First, John McCain was interviewed on Late Night with David Letterman. The set up was that Letterman had just interviewed Michael Moore from the RNC and discussed McCain mentioning Fahrenheit 9/11 during McCain’s speech. Moore said he was disappointed to hear disparaging comments from someone who had not seen the movie. McCain was on next from the studio and Letterman asked McCain about that part of the speech. McCain’s first comment was, "I was given a speech." Now I knew that McCain was being a good soldier for the Republican Party by giving that speech at the convention – but I really didn’t think that he would just read a speech prepared by the Bush/Cheney campaign. I suppose I’m naive but I really thought that I would be hearing McCain’s own thoughts – or at least those of a speechwriter that worked for him. Truly I think this speech will backfire on him in four years. Few Democrats will trust him and the part of the Republican Party that is in control never trusted him.
The next comment was from a commentary from a RNC delegate I heard on NPR this morning. Sorry I don’t remember his name but he is Asian American and a Professor and Temple Law School. His remarks were quite partisan – no surprise from a delegate – but a phrase that struck me was when he said the convention is showing "a vision of victory." Note that it was not a vision for the next four years. That is what I was tuning in to the convention to hear. President Bush get his chance tonight to tell us what a second term would look like – we haven’t heard much about it so far.
